Pokémon scalping is so out of hand, it’s even making donuts go out of stock before they’re available

Pokémon used to be a cool hobby, but the demand has gotten so ridiculous, it’s even affecting tasty treats.

The monster-catching IP’s latest collab with donut shop Krispy Kreme is set to launch tomorrow, but those looking to enjoy a yummy pastry emblazoned with Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander, or Jigglypuff are likely out of luck. Because why would we be able to enjoy anything?

I just checked the Krispy Kreme website and it appears that the donut pre-orders are completely sold out in all forms, even when it comes to branded cups full of 10 mini donut holes, let alone the cool treats with Pokémon designs on them. I personally don’t have a Krispy Kreme near me so I wouldn’t have been able to try them anyway, but I was looking forward to sending them to a loved one in another state as a surprise. Not happening, unfortunately.

The donuts look really cute, but some of them sound even tastier. Charmander’s donut is caramel iced with chocolate marshmallow-flavored filling, while Squirtle’s has cotton candy-flavored buttercreme. And then there’s Jigglypuff, with strawberry-flavored buttercreme. Yum. I’ll eat them in my imagination, I suppose.

Whether it’s merchandise, playing cards, games, or now pastries, it seems as though people can’t get enough of Pokémon for its 30th anniversary. I don’t indulge in the franchise nearly as much as I used to, but I was looking forward to surprise-dropping some donuts for someone I care about.

The cups going out of stock, I can understand. They’re collectibles, and they’re very cute, but they will also likely be up on eBay very soon (people are already selling empty donut boxes with Pokémon art on it, of course), and so the “scalping” culture continues.

Like a large part of the rest of the franchise, it appears that the time for enjoyment is now long gone, even in high-calorie form.
