Boruto Sets Up New Power Ups For Naruto And Sasuke After 12 Years
Naruto and Sasuke are the face of the Naruto franchise and two of the most iconic anime characters to ever exist. The Naruto series reached its conclusion on November 10, 2014, and has since begun a continuation with Boruto.
Despite Boruto Uzumaki leading this new era of Shinobi, the importance of Naruto and Sasuke absolutely cannot be understated. These two are still the face of the entire franchise and continue to fight for the sake of the entire world. Unfortunately, in Boruto Part 1, specifically in chapters 53 and 55, both Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha were tremendously weakened. Now, in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, their return is edging closer, and new power-ups are already lined up for them in this new series, which we are all excited to witness.
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Has Already Lined Up Official Power Ups For Naruto And Sasuke After A 12 Year Wait
In Naruto Chapter 673, which was officially released on May 5, 2014, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump issue #21, 12 years ago, Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha received their last significant power-ups by Masashi Kishimoto. These power-ups came as both of the ninjas met Hagoromo Otsutsuki, the Sage of Six Paths, and received half of his chakra each. Naruto received the Six Paths Yang chakra, while Sasuke got the Six Paths Yin chakra, and with these powers, they both awakened new jutsu. Naruto Uzumaki gained access to Six Paths Sage Mode, while Sasuke gained access to the Rinnegan, which awakened in his left eye. With these powers, these two were able to fight against the likes of Six Paths Madara and, later down the line, against Kaguya Otsutsuki.
“So one obtained the Senjutsu of the Six Paths, and one obtained the Rinnegan. Too bad, I've got both of those powers at the same time!" — Madara confirms Naruto and Sasuke's new powers, Naruto Chapter #673
By adulthood, their powers had grown even further to the point where they could fight against the likes of Momoshiki Otsutsuki, after he had fused with Kinshiki, without too much trouble. That said, as the story continued, it was apparent that Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha needed new powers. While Naruto did gain access to a completely new power in Baryon Mode, in Boruto Chapter 25, on November 19, 2020, it was temporary and lasted only for a matter of minutes. Since then, neither of the two has received a new form, and if anything, they have been nerfed tremendously. Naruto Uzumaki lost the powers of Kurama in Boruto Chapter 55 on February 19, 2021, while Sasuke Uchiha lost the power of his Rinnegan in Boruto Chapter 53 on December 20, 2020. Now, in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, however, both of them are set to reach new levels of power with a new upgrade from Kishimoto and Ikemoto.
"Normally, when a Jinchuriki's Biju is extracted, they die. But that doesn't apply to you. The Biju chakra simply vanishes. It might look to others like you're dead, but you're just in a temporary state of shock. Don't worry, you'll wake up soon. The price to pay for Baryon Mode is my life, not yours. I've got to go, but be real careful. You aren't gonna have superhuman strength anymore. So if you overdo it, you'll end up joining me soon. But until that day comes, you be well, Naruto." - — Naruto weakens after losing Kurama, Boruto Chapter #55
Why Both Naruto And Sasuke Could Receive New Unique Forms
In the Boruto series, both Sasuke Uchiha and Naruto Uzumaki are bound to receive significant strength upgrades, and that is quite clear for us to see right from the get-go. During the timeskip of the Boruto series, which lasted for 3 years, Sasuke Uchiha trained himself as well as Boruto Uzumaki in order to face significant threats to come in the future. The full results of this training have not been revealed to us yet, but Sasuke grew in power so dramatically that he was able to take one of Code's eyes from him in combat, despite being outnumbered with all the Claw Grimes around him.
To put that into perspective, Code, at this point, was significantly stronger than Jigen and around the same level as Isshiki. For Sasuke to be able to injure him in battle without even having the Rinnegan or any Six Paths powers shows that he unlocked unique powers during the timeskip and grew tremendously in terms of power.
Code: Uchiha, you!!! How dare you take my eye?
Sasuke: Listen closely, Boruto! There's no way we can win against him right now. So escape. Survive at all costs and build on the skills that I've hammered into you. Then nobody will be able to stop you.
— Sasuke displays results of training, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter #5
Furthermore, in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 28, Sasuke Uchiha's beloved Kusanagi Sword was upgraded by Sumire, and its powers were taken to a whole new level. His chakra was also registered with the new sword, meaning that upon his return, he can wield this newly forged katana and bring out more of his powers in combat. This automatically means that Naruto Uzumaki will also receive significant upgrades upon his return, which should happen within the next few arcs of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. Currently, we are dealing with the Post-Mamushi arc, which is set to continue on September 17, 2026, in V-Jump Issue #11. Following the conclusion of this arc, which will see Sasuke return, Naruto's comeback will also be worked upon by both Masashi Kishimoto and Mikio Ikemoto.
When Naruto and Sasuke return stronger than ever before, there is also a possibility of both of them receiving new forms. In the case of Sasuke Uchiha, this new form could come in the form of a Lightning Chakra Mode, or perhaps another new Rinnegan form that could manifest due to the Six Paths Chakra still present in his body. It is important to note that, in the case of Madara Uchiha, he manifested the Rinnegan in both eyes but only when he was close to his death, which happened decades after he infused Hashirama's flesh into his own body. Something similar could happen with Sasuke, granting him a completely new form. As far as Naruto Uzumaki goes, a significant portion of Kurama's chakra has become his own over the years. Furthermore, he could also receive more Tailed Beast chakra, which could upgrade his overall powers to a whole new level, granting him a new form as well.
The Final Power Levels Of Naruto And Sasuke After Comeback In Boruto
The final power levels of Naruto and Sasuke following their comeback are certainly going to be higher than they were at the beginning of the Boruto series. Sasuke has already received a few upgrades, and this was also directly confirmed by Mikio Ikemoto in the release of Boruto Volume #8 on May 1, 2026. If Sasuke were to awaken a Rinnegan in his right eye, or perhaps receive a new Chakra Mode, then his overall powers will surpass those he held at the beginning of Boruto.
"During their training together to get stronger, Boruto and Sasuke's main food sources were fish and wild birds, which they hunted using Raiton and Shuriken, along with wild plants and mushrooms." — Mikio Ikemoto confirms Sasuke’s power growth, Boruto Volume #8
As far as Naruto goes, he will likely never reach the same level of strength that he displayed with Baryon Mode, but surpassing Six Paths Sage Mode should not be too difficult for him. Naruto Uzumaki's level at the beginning of the Two Blue Vortex series wasn't all that high, but as always, he will have to match Sasuke Uchiha in terms of strength. As that happens, he will reach a new tier of strength. It is also important to note that the threat of the Otsutsuki is still looming in the Boruto series. While the next generation is strong, they cannot deal with every threat on their own. This is precisely why Sasuke and Naruto are still needed in Boruto, and why they can still get these upgrades as the story continues.
The latest Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapters by Mikio Ikemoto, written under the supervision of Masashi Kishimoto, are available to read via Manga Plus and Viz Media.
