Even though the Metroidvania genre has become pretty commonplace in the last couple of decades, there was a time it was a lot rarer. And while there are some iconic examples of the genre featured on the Nintendo DS, most notably Castlevania, many of the Metroidvanias on the handheld were quite experimental.
