The Mortal Kombat franchise has always had its ups and downs over the past 35 years, both in video game form — see Mortal Kombat: Special Forces, for example — and in live-action adaptations. The original Mortal Kombat movie from 1995 is still beloved by fans for its faithfulness to the source material. But that was quickly followed by the notoriously awful Mortal Kombat Annihilation, which put the film franchise on ice for more than 20 years. 2021's Mortal Kombat movie reboot was greeted warmly by action movie fans, though some hardcore MK heads took issue with the movie's original character, Cole Young.
