The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Blog Talks Player Choice
Owlcat Games posted a new blog post for sci-fi action RPG The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. The new post covers players’ choices in the game, and their potential consequence.
The first major choice example comes from the game’s closed beta, where players can choose to ask those on Pinkwater 4 to help them fight back after it is occupied by mercenaries. Convincing them to fight will make the player’s escape easier, but sees the station get destroyed, while telling them to stand down avoids casualties. Players may later meet some of the station personnel’s families and see the impacts of their decision.
Other choices can impact the player’s crew. For example, Polly is the youngest member and is trying to figure out her path. Players can influence her decision between doing something meaningful for her people and finding a path of her own through conversations, but will also be able to choose someone to mentor her. This choice can affect her future pursuits, as well as unlock a unique non-combat skill line, change her role in missions, and alter her appearance.
Players will also need to navigate the politics between the game’s various factions, most notably the competing forces of Earth, Mars, and the Belt. Assisting one side may end up causing a potential threat to another, but maintaining a strong relationship with a faction can reward the player with exclusive items or faction-specific quests. Faction choices will impact how the story unfolds and the fates of major characters.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is billed as expanding upon the universe depicted in The Expanse TV and novel series, which is set in a future where humanity has colonised the Solar System. Players are put in the role of a customised Pinkwater Security mercenary who will need to lead a crew and take command of the most advanced ship in the Solar System. Players are joined by two squadmates in battle; squadmates have their own pasts and motives, with their loyalty impacted by player decisions. A closed beta is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S for those who have purchased the $289 Collector’s Edition or $79.99 Miller’s Pack from the game’s official website, which is planned to run until the game’s launch in spring 2027.
