PlayStation gives us what we all wanted – the trunk closing sound in GTA 6
Forget new gameplay, an in-depth look at Vice City escapades, or even another full trailer. PlayStation has given us GTA 6 fans what we’ve really been waiting for: the sound of a car trunk closing.
Sony has launched its latest “It Happens on PS5” campaign, bringing together a bunch of the console’s biggest current and upcoming games, including Marvel’s Wolverine, God of War Laufey, and, naturally, Grand Theft Auto 6.
GTA 6 appears several times throughout the minute-long advert, although if you were hoping for brand-new footage you might want to temper your expectations. The clips are predominantly taken from previously released trailers, including a shot of Jason and Lucia viewed from inside the trunk of a car.
There is one incredibly important addition, though.
As the trunk shuts, we can now hear it slam closed, with the original GTA 6 Trailer 2 version of the scene having cut away without the sound effect. Naturally, considering just how hungry everyone is for GTA 6 information, fans have latched onto this tiny detail as if they’ve just won the lottery.
Before you start analyzing the exact weight and build quality of Leonida’s fictional car trunks, though, it’s worth noting that there’s no confirmation this is actually audio taken directly from GTA 6. The sound could simply have been added by PlayStation for dramatic effect. Unlikely, but you never know.
Thankfully, we shouldn’t have to survive on trunk noises for much longer, with Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look set to go live on Netflix on August 27, promising a much more substantial look at Rockstar’s next game.
GTA 6 itself launches on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Sony and Rockstar heavily promoting the PS5 version as the “best” place to play thanks to features including DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers, 3D audio, and near-instant loading.
Until August 27, I suppose we’ll take the trunk shutting silliness because, well, there’s nothing else to talk about.
