Get ready to roleplay in Night City: Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer mod is making tremendous progress
Did you know Cyberpunk 2077 had a whole team dedicated to creating a multiplayer component while it was still in development? Though we don’t really know what it might have looked like in practice, CDPR was going hard on the mode, but it ended up canceled as the game slowly slipped into development hell.
Even when the game’s credits roll, you still get to see countless devs who had worked on Cyberpunk‘s multiplayer, and given the little information we have about Cyberpunk 2, it seems CDPR nevertheless plans to create such a component for the sequel (if, of course, its development cycle is healthy and not a complete disaster like 2077‘s).
However, when developers fail, community modders rise up to the task, and now a proper multiplayer Cyberpunk mod is making tremendous progress toward opening Night City up to the world. “CyberMP,” as it’s called, is currently hosting a semi-open beta, with its creators releasing a new promotional video showing several players hanging out in Night City within the same instance.
With Cyberpunk 2077 being a first-person game, aggressively so, third-person animations are very, very janky, but it seems the devs implemented some tweaks and refinements to make it look somewhat passable.
Each player has their own name tag and fully custom character, while shared activities, such as riding in the same car together or racing in separate vehicles, seem to be completely stable.
There also appears to be a proper PVP system in place, with players able to engage each other in combat with a real-time kill feed appearing in the bottom-right corner. The team also hosted some massive PVP free-for-alls, and it genuinely seems like the most fun experience ever, especially when I think about using a katana and a Sandevistan to slash through an entire lobby.
The final release date for the mod is unknown at the moment, but given how far it’s come, I’d say we’re quite close to seeing its full launch.
This mod could introduce a feature that Cyberpunk 2077 was probably always meant to have, that of a live, open-world multiplayer RP server, the likes of which we’ve seen in GTA 5, or, rather, GTA Online.
We don’t really know what CDPR had planned for this game’s multiplayer side, but I’m willing to bet it wasn’t far from Rockstar’s take. It never materialized, but thanks to these talented modders, we might finally be able to RP with friends along the neon streets of Night City.
