Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World Introduces More Characters, Locations
Square Enix released new details and images for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, the latest entry in the Dragon Quest Monsters spin-off series to Dragon Quest. The new information introduces some more of the characters and locations in the game — which is set to release for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 on December 3, 2026 — plus a special artifact players will make use of.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World stars Bianca and Nera from Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. The duo meet by chance, with both searching for a way to cure the illnesses of their fathers and resolve to work together. Their adventure sees them becoming monster wranglers who rely on allied monsters that they have captured, bred, and raised to battle.
The game sees Bianca and Nera visit the Kingdom of Witherwood. The land was previous lush and fertile, due to the protection of the Archeagles, but has recently seen the forces of darkness wreak destruction. One of its main threats is the appearance of Meteocite crystals, which absorb despair from the people and drain the life of the land. It is currently ruled by King Withers (voiced by Kim Durham), who asks Bianca and Nera to use their powers to save the kingdom and provides help to them as they seek to assist the people and destroy the crystals.
Another important character is Ed (Vinay Lad), a self-styled living legend among monster wranglers who Bianca and Nera first meet at Witherwood Castle and tries to show off in front of them. Ed is joined by his partner, Scruffy (Tobias Weatherburn). The duo will also encounter the mysterious Thespidor (Feliks Mathur). Known as the “showrunner of the darkness below”, Thespidor created the meteocite crystals for unknown purposes and appearing multiple time throughout the game.
Witherwood acts as the player’s main base of operations, from where the venture into various different regions and biomes. Locations include a sun-drenched plain that leads to an ever-rainy swamp and an icy tower on a tall mountain. They will visit distinct regions such as Taiboku, which has bamboo groves and rice paddies in addition to a special landmark packs with traps, and Lushland, which has enormous fruits and vegetables that players can climb. While exploring regions, players may encounter monsters with a red aura, which may be able to become powerful allies.
As players explore, they will discover Roots of Creation and Lifebuds. These are remnants of the Archeagles’s power that has lost their energy to the darkness. However, Bianca and Nera will obtain a magical artifact called the Waterwing Can, which can restore life. If players find and restore a Root of Creation, they will be able to Zoom directly to it and use to the heal or synthesise new monsters. Players may also find a monster wrangler nearby a Root of Creation; they will challenge players, granting a reward if defeated. Meanwhile, parched Lifebuds can be found across the world and be restored to grant passive bonuses that will assist players. Other bushes can also be sprinkled with the Waterwing Can, which might provide items or unearth a hidden rare monster.
