Overwatch Director Officially Says More Fan-Favorite Heroes Are Coming

Overwatch has a frankly unreasonable number of characters everyone wants to play, and Blizzard is leaning into the problem. Game director Aaron Keller has officially teased that Blizzard is “doubling down” on fan-favorite heroes and storylines.

In an interview I had with Keller today, he said that Overwatch’s upcoming seasons are being built around cohesive packages of new content, with familiar characters playing an increasingly important role. Season 4, for example, puts the MEKA Squad in the spotlight, while the previous season expanded the story around the Shimada clan.

Keller suggested this focus on established fan favorites is not a one-off.

“It is this idea of doubling down on fan favorites, and we did that partially last season with Shion,” Keller said referring to the Hashimoto clan character, a rival faction to the Shimadas. “And so I think that, as we look forward, players can probably start to see and expect even more of that coming to the game.”

That could mean more existing Overwatch characters getting their moment in the spotlight as the team continues expanding the game's annual story.

Keller’s comments are especially notable given how many recent additions were well-established lore figures before becoming playable.

The MEKA Squad is one example. D.Mon joined D.Va this week as the second playable member of the South Korean mech squad, a fan-favorite faction that had existed in Overwatch's lore for years. Jetpack Cat is another example: Fika had been a running fan request and joke before finally becoming a hero in Season 1. Blizzard itself described her as a “long-running dream Hero".

There is certainly no shortage of future candidates. Other frequently requested possibilities include fellow MEKA Squad members Overlord and Dae-hyun, as well as omnics Maximilien and Lynx 17. None of those characters have been confirmed as future heroes, but Keller's comments make the game's enormous bench of established characters feel a little more interesting.

Keller was similarly coy about what Blizzard has planned for Overwatch at this year's BlizzCon, but confirmed there will be “a lot of Overwatch” at the event and teased that many announcements will be surprises. The emphasis on surprises hints that Team 4 may be planning a few hero reveals during the con.

If you, like me, have spent the last decade pointing at an Overwatch character wanting them to be playable, this is probably the closest thing to a Bat-Signal Blizzard has sent you. Keller isn't naming names yet, but his message is pretty clear: the fan favorites and long-awaited characters of Overwatch aren't going anywhere. In fact, there may be a lot more of them coming.
