Guild Wars 3 Introduces Its Humans
ArenaNet released new details about the setting for Guild Wars 3, introducing the first of its four playable races: Humans. In a new blog post, narrative designer Danny Barnes provided the backstory and motivations behind humanity in the game. With Guild Wars 3 set over a thousand years prior to the events of the first game, Guild Wars 3′s humans are a people newly entering Tyria’s magical region of Orr, building up settlements and looking to establish new homes.
Humanity originally hails from a region beyond the Mists, and were brought to the region by their six gods, with the reason for their departure from their original world uncertain. It has established itself in Tyria over the past seven hundred years, and established multiple centres of power. Orr acts at a great frontier, as humanity seeks to make the most of its potential, with its gods watching over their progress from the high city of Arah. Orr is home to entities that have strong connections to the land called Vael spirits, with which humanity has a complicated relationship.
Players begin the game as a member of the Vaelwardens, a guild founded to protect the Vael spirits and the lands they inhabit. As a human Vaelwarden, players will need to take a different line of thought to what most of humanity teaches — that Orr is a untamed frontier — and look to balance the wants and ambitions of their people with their oath to defend the magic of Orr. Guild Wars 3 is planned to release simultaneously on PC and PlayStation 5, with a first beta test currently expected to begin in fall 2027.
